First, we have the Bushcraft Skills Award. This is an assessed award at RQF Level 2 / SCQF Level 5 covering practical and applied bushcraft skills and knowledge. It has been designed for pupils and other learners.
- Bushcraft Skills Award: It covers 8 bushcraft subjects: shelters, fire, health and safety, tool use, drinking water, woodland trees, directions, natural string. It can be delivered by teachers, trainers, and instructors in formal or non-formal settings such as early years, schools, colleges, outdoor centres, education centres, wildlife trusts, national parks, etc. Assessment is independent of the training provider through a portfolio that is submitted to the IOL and, if successful, is certificated by the IOL Awards Centre.
Then we have assessed competency in Bushcraft at Level 3. There are 3 different competency awards available and these are differentiated by the breadth of Bushcraft Knowledge:
- Bushcraft Competency Award: Assessed competence in the following 5 units.
- Bushcraft Competency Certificate: Assessed competence in the following 8 units.
- Bushcraft Competency Diploma: Assessed competence in the following 14 compulosry units and 2 from 4 optional units.

How do I become an IOL approved Bushcraft Awards Trainer?
IOL Bushcraft award training is delivered by trainers who have been approved by the IOL.
The trainers will have had their experience, qualifications and ability to provide structured, progressive training to the award syllabus inspected and approved by the IOL.
This process is different to that of an instructor training scheme. We have reviewed their experience and qualifications on paper. We have asked them to show evidence that they can deliver the award syllabus in a structured and appropriate way. We believe that these individuals should be competent to deliver the award training. It is down to individual providers to assure themselves of their competence and ongoing development. The approved trainers have not gone through a formal training and assessment process that practically demonstrates their competence.
IOL approved trainers must:
- Be an individual member of the IOL.
- Have professional recognition from the IOL (APOL, POL, RPIOL, APIOL, LPIOL)
- Pay the application fee.
- Complete and submit this application form, along with all supporting documents. The application form is used to ensure that the candidate has all the skills, qualifications and experience to deliver high quality bushcraft training at the level applied for.
How do I become an IOL approved Bushcraft Awards Provider?
The providers will have had their processes inspected and approved by the IOL.
This process is different to that of a centre inspection scheme. We have reviewed the organisations structures and processes on paper. We have asked them to show evidence that they can deliver the award syllabus in a structured and appropriate way. We believe that these organisations should be safe to deliver the award training at a suitable level of quality. It is down to individual providers to assure themselves of the ongoing robustness of their systems, competence of their staff and ongoing development. The approved providers have not gone through a formal inspection and assessment process that samples their competence.
IOL approved providers must:
- Be an organisational member of the IOL.
- Pay the application fee.
- Complete and submit this application form, along with all supporting documents. The application form is used to ensure that the provider has everything in place in order to deliver high quality bushcraft training at the level applied for.
How do I become an IOL approved Bushcraft Award Assessor?
