Editorial Board Members for the Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning

Editorial Board Members are expected to review 3-4 articles per year (which are often those that require a quick turnaround or where an Associate Editor has had trouble finding suitable reviewers), attend two Board meetings (online), and act as a strong champion/ambassador for the Journal.

The Journal of Adventure Education & Outdoor Learning is an official publication of the Institute for Outdoor Learning and has a strong reputation across a variety of metrics. The main purpose of the journal is to provide a central point and place of reference for the publication and dissemination of research and scholarship on adventure and the outdoors for learning and education.

The journal aims to promote dialogue, research, thinking, teaching and practice from critical perspectives in the fields of adventure education and outdoor learning. It intends to publish papers concerned with social, cultural, political, ethical and environmental issues in the outdoor studies field.

Key Skills and Attributes

We welcome applications from all scholars working within the broad fields of adventure education and outdoor learning, cutting across disciplinary boundaries, around the globe. However, at this time, we particularly encourage those who meet any of the following criteria to apply:

  • From historically under-represented groups within academia (Black, Indigenous, people of colour, LGBTQ2S+, disabled).
  • Resident in the Middle East (or Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe).
  • Early career researcher (with some publishing/peer review experience).
  • Quantitative expertise.

Application instructions

Your application should include a cover letter and CV:

  • Cover letter (1-2 pages) should include your name, institutional affiliation, where you reside (or the geography you can speak to), career stage, and previous work with the JAEOL or related journals. Please also answer these questions:
    • What is your broad area of interest/expertise within outdoor studies?
    • What will you bring to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Adventure Education & Outdoor Learning?
    • What do you believe the role of an Editorial Board Member is, or should be?
    • How do you approach peer review?
  • CV (2 pages maximum) should focus on your publishing/peer review experience. This can be substituted with an appropriate link to an Institutional webpage, personal website, or LinkedIn profile.

Deadline for applications is Monday, June 1, 2026. We anticipate the successful applicants will be officially invited to join the Board for July 2026 and should be available to attend their first Board meeting in November 2026.
