IOL Bushcraft Competency Certificate Assessment

This IOL Statement of Good Practice is designed to assist and support teachers, instructors and leaders to follow accepted practice and develop a high level of safety and competency in a range of bushcraft skills. It is relevant to for those working in all areas of outdoor learning - education, personal or professional development, therapy, expeditions, etc.

Following a Bushcraft Competency Certificate training course you should then undergo a period of consolidation before attending assessment which will need to confirm evidence by completing the BCC logbook.

Syllabus

  • Safe Shelter Construction
  • Safe use of tools and knife law
  • Establishing and maintaining fires by; bow drill, flint and steel and other methods
  • Leaving no trace
  • Water Sourcing, Filtering and Purification
  • Tree ID & uses
  • Natural Navigation
  • Cordage making from natural products

Learning Outcomes

This certificate demonstrates that the holder has successfully demonstrated a high level of safety and competency in the subjects covered by the course.

Assessors

There will usually be at least 2 assessors with a minimum of 6 years experience in teaching bushcraft and survival skills.

 

Sending your log book

You will need to send your completed log book pages (electronicially is preferred, scanned or photo'd as a JPG) to IOL at least 10 days prior to the assessment. If you aren't able to send electronically please post the pages (not the folder) to IOL, Warwick Mill Business Centre, Warwick Bridge, Carlisle, CA4 8RR, at least 14 days prior to the assessment.

 

You can attend an assessment without attending a training course, however, you will still need to evidence your experience in the BCC logbook and be able to meet the standards as stated in the IOL Bushcraft Competency Certificate Statement of Good Practice.

USEFUL KIT TO HAVE

Packed lunch and drink

Suitable outdoor clothes – boots etc

Knife/saws that you use

4 or more ignition sources incl bow drill

Variety of tinder and kindling

Log book (you will need to have a completed log book)

Pen or pencil

 

Further information we will need from you prior to your assessment:

  • An emergency contact telephone number
  • Any medical condition information
  • Likelihood of any support that might be needed during your assessment (written work that might require the assessor to write or ask questions verbally).

You can attend an assessment without attending a training course, however, you will still need to evidence your experience in the BCC logbook and be able to meet the standards as stated in the IOL Bushcraft Competency Certificate Statement of Good Practice.

 

Cancellations etc for IOL Bushcraft Certificate Assessments:

Transfer of your booking to an alternate date/venue. If you choose to transfer the date and venue for an assessment which you have booked there will be a charge incurred. Transfers are only available for Assessment bookings that are fully paid.

  • Transfer request received 15 days or more before the booked assessment date - 30% of assessment fee.
  • Transfer request received within 7 days to 14 days of the booked assessment date - 50% of assessment fee.
  • Transfer request received less than 7 days before the booked assessment date - 75% of assessment fee.
  • Transfer fees are non-refundable.
