Senior Instructor at Hampshire County Council, Argoed Lwyd Outdoor Education Centre
Full time position / Permanent employment
Salary: £33,178 – £36,369 per annum
Closing date: 26th March 2026
Interview Date: 14th April 2026
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Instructor to join our Argoed Lwyd Outdoor Education Centre team at Hampshire County Council.
The Role:
Argoed Lwyd Outdoor Education Centre is Hampshire County Council’s mountain centre, set in the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. Surrounded by mountains, rivers, caves and waterfalls, the Centre provides young people and adults with access to challenging and inspiring outdoor learning opportunities, including mountain walking, caving, gorge walking and paddle sports, all delivered by experienced and qualified instructors.
We are looking to appoint an experienced and motivated Senior Instructor (Activities and Training) to join the operational leadership team. This is a senior, hands-on role within a small, highly skilled team, combining direct instructional delivery with responsibility for staff leadership, training and day-to-day operational oversight of adventurous activity programmes.
What you’ll do:
Working closely with the Lead Instructor and Centre Manager, you will play a visible leadership role on site, setting high standards of professional practice, supporting instructors in real time and ensuring that activities are delivered safely, effectively and to a high professional standard. The role sits at the heart of operational delivery, translating organisational expectations into day-to-day practice and maintaining a strong focus on risk management, staff competence and customer experience.
As a senior member of the operational team, you will contribute to workforce development through staff supervision, training, mentoring and competence assessment, while also acting as Duty Manager as part of an agreed rota.
What we’re looking for:
We’re looking for someone who is suitably qualified and experienced to contribute to the multi activity programme. We offer a range of activities, including (but not exclusively) mountain walking, caving, paddle sport, climbing and gorge walking.
You will bring significant experience of working in outdoor centres, proven ability to lead and inspire staff teams, strong decision‑making skills and the confidence to manage dynamic risk in challenging outdoor environments.
