REPORTS TO: Outdoor Education Centre Manager

SALARY: £27,746 - £32,165 per annum.

HOURS: Flexible - 35 hours per week (evening and weekend working)

We’re excited to offer a unique opportunity for a passionate and proactive Deputy Outdoor Centre Manager to take a leading role in the development and management of a new Forest School, bushcraft, and outdoor education site in the heart of Delamere Forest. Working alongside the Outdoor Education Manager at Petty Pool and a dedicated team, you’ll help shape the vision, oversee delivery, and ensure the smooth running of high-quality outdoor learning experiences that align with Forestry England’s mission to care for forests for people, nature, and climate. 

You’ll design and lead impactful woodland-based programmes that promote confidence, resilience, and personal growth, while supporting curriculum-linked learning and inclusive participation for people of all ages and backgrounds. The site includes three distinct woodland areas and on-site facilities designed to support creative, safe, and engaging programme delivery.

Purpose of the Role 

To develop the day-to-day leadership and management of the Delamere Forest OEC, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, inclusive forest and outdoor learning experiences. The Deputy will lead on key operational functions, deputise in the absence of the Manager, and help transform the centre into a Learning and Development hub aligned with Petty Pool’s inclusive vision. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Deputise for the Petty Pool OEC Manager, assuming full responsibility in their absence. 
  • Assist in the operational delivery and coordination of all forest education activities, ensuring safety, inclusion, and learner engagement. 
  • Lead activity sessions, off-site residentials, and events in line with national standards and internal policy. 
  • Support recruitment, induction, training, and day-to-day supervision of instructors, freelancers, and volunteers. 
  • Maintain up-to-date staff training records and ensure compliance with health and safety and safeguarding standards. 
  • Support the upkeep of equipment, facilities, and resources, including inspections, maintenance, and stores management. 
  • Contribute to the development and review of risk assessments, SOPs, and operational plans. 
  • Monitor and evaluate delivery outcomes, gathering feedback and supporting continuous improvement. 
  • Work with schools and partners to ensure programmes are appropriate, purposeful, and accessible for all learners, including those with SEND. 
  • Assist in preparing for AALA, AHOEC, and other accreditation visits and compliance activities. 
  • Champion the values of Petty Pool, promoting a strengths-based, inclusive approach to all aspects of outdoor learning. 
  • Promote and follow guidance as laid out by Forest England. 
  • Design, deliver and manage exceptional forest and outdoor education activities  
  • Lead in the collection of feedback and report to line managers on KPI’s.

Person Specification 

Qualifications 

  • Qualified and Experienced in Forest School or Bushcraft.  (E) 
  • NGB awards across land/water-based activities (or willingness to work towards) (D) 
  • First Aid and Safeguarding qualification (or willingness to obtain). (E) 
  • Driving licence with D1 (minibus entitlement) preferred. (E)  

Experience & Skills 

  • Proven experience in forest activity delivery and group facilitation.  
  • Proven knowledge of managing safeguarding.  
  • Proven knowledge of safe practice in Forest School, Bushcraft, Outdoor Education and risk processes. 
  • Experience managing and working with a variety of age groups, including those with additional needs. 
  • Experience of managing and delivery within alternative provision. 
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills. 
  • Experience in business development and project or centre management.    
  • A positive, adaptable approach and commitment to inclusive practice.
