Outdoor Learning in Wales

Wales is divided into three regions, each of which includes a National Park and one of the three Welsh Outdoor Charter Groups. (These are grass roots movements set up by local practitioners to help them look after their ‘office’ and are open to any practitioner operating within Wales). North Wales (the Heart of Adventure) stretches from northernmost Anglesey to the southern boundary of the rugged Snowdonia National Park; from the wild western coast of the Llyn peninsula to the English border and includes Gwynedd, Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham and northern Powys. This area has given rise to the North Wales Environmental Outdoor Charter Group. South-West Wales includes Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and of course Pembrokeshire with its glorious Coastal National Park (the only one in the UK) which is looked after by the Pembrokeshire Outdoor Charter Group. South-East Wales covers the Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Bridgend and southern Powys and includes the beautiful silent reaches of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Practitioners here and from further west set up the South Wales Outdoor Activity Providers Group. Wales has a long tradition of providing Outdoor Learning for people of all ages and abilities. Providers here have a strong commitment to sustainability (environmental, economic and cultural) and inclusivity. They also celebrate the opportunities that a vibrant Welsh culture offers to all.

IOL Cymru Conference 2019

The theme of the conference is ‘Discovery’

It will be held at Atlantic College, St Donat’s Castle, St Donat’s, Llantwit Major, CF61 1WF on November 16th 2019.

The theme of the conference is ‘Discovery’ and we have two speakers booked: Caradog Jones and Rob Penn.

Caradog has a string of first ascents to his name including Hunza Peak in Pakistan, but is probably best known for being the first Welshman to summit Everest.

Rob Penn is an author, journalist, TV presenter and cyclist. You may have read his books – ‘The Man who made Things out of Trees’ and ‘It’s All About the Bike: the Pursuit of Happiness on Two Wheels’ – or seen him on TV cycling part of the Trans-Amazonian Highway with Freddie Flintoff.

In addition, there some interesting peripheral events going on including the BGM (biennial general meeting) of IOL Cymru.

There will be a wide choice of workshops, talks and updates including:

  • Building Resilience
  • Passing Inspections
  • The New Welsh Curriculum
  • Bushcraft: Mindful Shelters
  • Bushcraft tools: their safety and use
  • Diversity in the Outdoors
  • Journalling in the outdoors
  • A taster for ‘Fostering a Connection’

Cost of tickets is £30 for both individual and organisational members of IOL and £94 for non-members.
IOL members can buy up to 4 tickets at this price for family members and friends. Some discounted tickets (£30) will be available for members of the Urdd, the Outdoor Partnership and the NRW Outdoor Learning groups.

Bookings include teas, coffees and a buffet lunch.

A range of accommodation is available at the venue and locally and we hope to arrange transport for people attending from more distant parts of Wales (neither included in the price).
