Outdoor Learning in the South & Channel Islands

The Southern Region includes the beautiful coast, lakes, rivers, downs, open countryside, city centres and two National parks spread across the counties of Hampshire, West and East Sussex, Kent, Surrey, London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire along with the Isle of Wight and Channel Islands. We have a great array of environments used by our members, from rural open spaces, dramatic coastlines, to open country and city centre provision. The region has a strong outdoor learning community with many centres and freelancers operating in the very diverse and active region.

The voluntary committee represents IOL in your region, get in touch with us. We wish to represent your views.

Workshop 11th May 2022 - with a particular focus on fieldwork teaching

CULTIVATE is a Natural Environment Research Council funded project addressing issues of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within Environmental Sciences - with a particular focus on fieldwork teaching. The project aims to move away from working in silos to the co-production of knowledge and practices by the community for the community. In February 2022 we brought the academic community together during a hackathon to capture and explore existing practices around EDI, digital technology and field teaching.

Following on from the success of the hackathon we're now expanding our invitation and would like to see if anyone in your group might be interested in attending our next workshop which will take place on Wednesday 11th May, 10am – 4pm at Bangor University (please see the advert attached for further details). The aim of the workshop will be to review and evaluate the resources we have put together following the hackathon in February. We would also like to bring the community together to consider where we go next in terms of EDI, digital practice, field teaching and sharing communities of practice.

If you are interested in this event, please register your interest on this form. We have some funding to support travel and subsistence but please note that places will be limited. We may look to hold an online equivalent and there is an option to register your interest in this on the form.
