Outdoor Learning in the South West

The South West has a varied terrain offering a wide range of outdoor learning opportunities. We have a coastline that provides a huge amount of activities from Coasteering to Offshore Yachting, moors which host some of the toughest events, Ten Tors and the steepest hills for cyclists riding from John o groats to Lands End. The residential and outdoor education sector is well established with a variety of colleges and Higher Education institutions offering a wide range of courses, and we still have Local Education Authority Centres. Employment in the outdoors is high, and we have a strong freelance opportunities, all in England's mildest climate!

The voluntary committee represents IOL in your region, get in touch with us. We wish to represent your views.

Cranborne Chase first entire AONB to be a dark sky reserve

The night sky above parts of Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset has been designated an international dark sky reserve.

Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is only the 14th such area in the world to be certified.

The status is awarded by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) to areas which offer "exceptional starry skies".

It is the first AONB in the country to be designated in its entirety.

The IDA status, which took Cranborne Chase AONB 10 years to achieve, means controls are in place to prevent light pollution.
