Outdoor Learning in the North East

The North East region covers from Berwick on the border of Scotland, to the west with the border of Cumbria, through the beautiful undeveloped landscape of high moorland in Northumberland featuring its many castles and 64 miles of long distance paths bordering the coastline of the North Sea. Dropping down from the North through Newcastle and County Durham into York and ending at Hull with its Maritime history. Whether urban or rural you are never too far from the countryside or coast.

The voluntary committee represents IOL in your region, get in touch with us. We wish to represent your views.

New edition of the UK Ropes Course and Off-Ground Adventure Activities Guide

Guidance to ropes course operators, installers, trainers and inspectors

ERCA are happy to announce that the completely revised and amended version of the document was published a few days ago and is available for download here now. The document is for guidance to ropes course operators, installers, trainers and inspectors. It is not a substitute for existing laws, norms or standards, but with its practical orientation, it can be a very good help to understand the interdependencies and to identify supportive resources. Furthermore, the new edition also reflects similarities and differences between ropes courses and newly invented off-ground activities, such as net parks, stand-alone zip line attractions or simulated free fall devices.

They are indebted to the editors, namely Emma Bell, Chris Proud and Steve Woods who compiled the new edition. An additional thanks goes to all reviewers who contributed to the extensive guidance.
This edition was compiled in conjunction with …

… the Adventure Activities Industry Advisory Committee,

… the European Ropes Course Association,

… and the Health and Safety Executive.
