Outdoor Learning in the North East

The North East region covers from Berwick on the border of Scotland, to the west with the border of Cumbria, through the beautiful undeveloped landscape of high moorland in Northumberland featuring its many castles and 64 miles of long distance paths bordering the coastline of the North Sea. Dropping down from the North through Newcastle and County Durham into York and ending at Hull with its Maritime history. Whether urban or rural you are never too far from the countryside or coast.

The voluntary committee represents IOL in your region, get in touch with us. We wish to represent your views.

Merging IOL, AHOEC and the Outdoor Council (OC) - to be the Outdoor Learning Association

One organisation

Background

The proposal to merge the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL), the Association of Headsof Outdoor Education Centres (AHOEC) and the Outdoor Council (OC) into one single organisation was first discussed at the Outdoor Learning Sector Conference in 2018. With members’ support, work to develop this proposal has been ongoing and now includes thewelcome addition of the British Activity Providers Association (BAPA) into the plans. The developments have been led by an Interim Management Group, operating under the titleof UK Outdoors, and further guided and shaped by sector wide discussions across thewhole of the UK.

The idea of a merger is nothing new to our sector. The matter was raised in 1997 by Peter Higgins in his article ‘Too Many Singers and Not Enough Songs? Towards Professionalism in Outdoor Education’ and in 1999 discussions began on the formation ofwhat was to become the Institute for Outdoor Learning. In addition to the original fiveorganisations that formedIOL, there were a number of others involved and three of them are part of the proposal presented here, taking us on the next stage of a journey that started over 20 years ago.
