Residential Outdoor Centres and Department for Education in England

Residential Outdoor Centres and Department for Education in England

Thanks to a co-ordinated ask by the providers in the school travel sector, which involved letters being sent to Gavin Williamson (Secretary for Education), Robert Halfron (Chair of Education Committee) and many local MP’s, a meeting recently took place between the Department and Sector representatives to consider the current advice against school residential visits.

As a result of the meeting, the Department have committed to a cross department review of their advice which will start with a meeting this week.  To inform this meeting and demonstrate providers ability to comply with all available current guidance, representatives of AHOEC, BAPA & IOL have developed a guide to regulations and recommendations for Covid-19 safe opening of centres.

The sector has made it clear that too many children and young people are unable to benefit from its services and that there is a very real danger of significantly reducing the sector’s future capacity through closures and restructures and is asking for a policy change within a 2 week period.  To date the dialogue has focused on domestic residential school outdoor centre visits and the intention is to progress this to the wider school travel.

Further updates will made available through August.
