Outdoor Learning Specialist Apprenticeship approved for delivery

Employers drawn from across the breadth of the UK Outdoor Sector collaborated to produce the ground-breaking apprenticeship. IOL Project Management enabled 51 employers to contribute to the design of the standard, with a core team of Neal Anderson (IOL and Project Manager), Mark Lavington (Employer Group Chair, PGL), Marc Oakley (Outward Bound), Rhia Pratt (Locomotivation), Jo Harris and Janine Maddison (Field Studies Council), Dr Roger Hopper (Heatree/South Devon College), Steve Randles (Inspiring Learning), and Loel Collins (Plas y Brenin).

The Role
Outdoor Learning Specialists are able to design, plan and deliver programmes that provide progressive learning and change using outdoor activities and experiences. They can apply professional outdoor leadership judgement and use relevant facilitation approaches and theories of learning and development to support the intended outcomes of a programme and encourage participants to achieve their potential.

Outdoor Learning Specialists are able to work with any outdoor employer, with any job title, with any programme outcomes.

Entry Requirements
The Outdoor Learning Specialist Apprenticeship focuses on training individuals who have experience as an outdoor activity instructor and are ready to take their skills and knowledge to the next level.

For many the OLS Apprenticeship will be a long awaited career step, for others it could follow on from the Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship or a College Level 3 Diploma such as Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport and Outdoor Activities or the NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoors).

Training
Lasting 24 months, training will be tailored to the apprentice's and employer's needs. There is no set syllabus or prescribed training course – employers negotiate what training their apprentices require with training providers (and at what price) in order to meet the knowledge, skills and behaviours described in the standard.

Relevant qualifications, awarding or governing body awards can be included in the training.

All apprentices must have achieved English and mathematics at Level 2 and the following qualifications:

* Level 2 Ofqual registered Award in Safeguarding relevant to the employer’s business.
* Level 3 Ofqual registered 2-day Outdoor First Aid Award.

End Point Assessment involves apprentices creating and presenting a customer Proposal Report, Observation of their leadership and facilitation skills, and a Professional Discussion exploring their environmental approach and customer relationships. Pearson have applied to provide EPA for this standard.

Professional Recognition
This apprenticeship standard is matched to the IOL Occupational Standard for the role and allows successful apprentices to meet the requirements for registration as an Associate Professional in Outdoor Learning with the Institute for Outdoor Learning.
