Funding the next Outdoor Apprenticeship - Let's make it happen

The next Outdoor Apprenticeship Standard – looking for your support

As you will know IOL played a central role in the development of the NEW Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship which focuses on training individuals who are new to the sector to run safe and enjoyable activity sessions with children and adults. The standard is at Level 3, lasts 12-18 months, and attracts up to £6000 of funding towards off-the-job training and end-point assessment per apprentice (in England).

A number of IOL members and employers have expressed a desire for further Outdoor Apprenticeships appropriate for more complex roles.

Building on the success of the last apprenticeship, a small and committed number of employers have put together a plan for development of an apprenticeship at level 4-5 – Outdoor Programme Leader (working Title). A new apprenticeship would:

- Create another agreed standard for the sector, by the sector

- Enable access to funding (in England) that isn’t currently available

- Directly benefit employers and training organisations in the sector

- Provide a career progression route for outdoor activity instructors

We can’t do this like last time though.

A crowdfunding approach is being taken by employers in order to get the project underway.

Employers, education/training organisations and other interested parties are asked to contribute.

There are two documents attached explaining more about the project:

A letter from Mark as the Employer Group Chair – primary message is that the project will cost £28k and we can’t start without sufficient funds. So far, we have £10,000 pledged.

A longer document from IOL breaking down what we had to do to get the last one over the line, and what is required for the next one (in effect having been commissioned by the Employers group to do the work).

So, our request, is for you or your organisation to support the project in whatever way you can, and to ask for financial support please.

You can keep up to date with developments and progress towards our funding target here.

Please do get in touch with either myself of Neal if you would like to know more.
