Seasonal Activity Instructor


We have an exciting opportunity for a Seasonal Activity Instructor to join our team at either Downe-Kent, Youlbury-Oxford or Hawkhirst-Hexham. You will join us on a full time 9 month fixed term contract working 40 hours per week. In return, you will receive a competitive salary of £17,077 per annum.

About the role:

The Seasonal Activity Instructor will join our Adventures team and have just as much passion about getting young people outdoors to have an adventure as we are.You will be an experienced instructor who has worked with a wide range of groups and in a number of disciplines which might include Paddle Sports, Target Sports, Bushcraft, Climbing and High Ropes. You’ll also be happy to provide peer support for our volunteer instructors acting as a role model for good instructing, and even helping with aspects of training and monitoring, as well as all the other aspects of operating a busy activity centre. 


What will you be doing?

o Act as a role model ensuring best practice within the instructing team, informally mentoring less experienced instructors and volunteers.

o Work with our centre teams to deliver high quality adventure experiences to our customers.

o Assist with the maintenance, preparation, organisation and issuing of equipment.

o Assist in the daily site duties to ensure a functional environment to deliver residential experiences. o Undertake evening duties on a rota basis, assisting the supervision of groups and provision of evening activities. o Undertake overnight on-call duties when required, providing a first point of contact for customers in an emergency.

o Assist in ensuring that a safe environment exists for all visitors to the Centre.

o Undertake other reasonable duties as may be required by the Centre Manager.

o Contribute to welcoming and supportive ethos, working flexibly when necessary to support colleagues.

o The post holder must promote and safeguard the welfare of the children and young People that they are responsible for, or come in contact with.

o This role will require weekend and evening working.

What we are looking for in our Seasonal Activity Instructor:

Skills and abilities

o Good communication skills especially orally.

o Ability to deliver adventurous and educational activities to and our broad range of guests.

o Demonstrate an ability to provide first class customer service.

o A willingness to take action and to make decisions independently.

o Sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others.

o A desire to understand how things work and to seek out opportunities to learn and grow.

Knowledge and Experience

o Understanding of Scout Association and how we operate.

o Ability to adapt easily to situations and demonstrates a willingness to learn.

o At least 2 qualifications relevant to the centre, such as: SPA/RCI, CWA/CWI, Mountain Leader, ERCA Instructor and Rescuer, BCU Paddlessport Instructor or Leader, Dinghy Instructor, Achery GB Instructor, NSRA YPS Tutor, LMCLA Level 1, or significant other relevant expirience. (please justify this in your application form)

o Experience of working at an outdoor or activity centre or similar setting.

Other essential criteria

o The nature of this post and the environment requires significant weekend and evening working.

o The post is a live in position in shared accommodation provided as part of the employment package with no deductions to salary for either.

o A valid driving license would be advantageous but is not essential.
