The Scheme

Our instructor development scheme is a part of the City of Edinburgh Council’s outdoor learning Team. Operating from 3 different LEA Centre’s, one based in the City of Edinburgh itself, while the second is based in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs national park near Dunoon and the third based in the Cairngorm National Park near Kincraig.

You will be based at Benmore but during your time with us you may have the opportunity to work in all 3 centres. Whilst here you will gain experience of working in different environments and groups, improve your personal skill set, as well as working towards and gaining NGB awards. Although trainee instructors are not paid positions, we do provide board and lodgings, a personal food allowance each week and fund your training and assessments for each NGB award.

We require a high level of commitment for 12 months

We aim to recruit up to 4 individuals each year on to the Instructor Development Scheme. This scheme will provide these people the opportunity of one year’s work experience.

Personal Qualities

Enjoys and actively participates in activities such as hill walking, paddle sport, mountain biking, skiing, sailing or climbing

Highly motivated to gain as much experience as possible from the year

Minimum 18 years old

Confident swimmer

We offer

Extensive programme of Training including session plans, group control, care of equipment.

Mentoring throughout the year.

Practical experience. We build on practical experience so you can progress from basic instructing to facilitating sessions at a high professional standard.

Full board and Accommodation.

NGB Training and Assessment when experience and pre requisites are met.

We are keen for you to create your own outdoor adventures and experiences and the Centre will help with planning and preparation for your first trips to give you the confidence and skills to go forward and plan your own journeys.

We are accepting applications now.

Closing date – 6/12/19

Four positions available.

Start date negotiable between December 2019 and April 2020.

Successful applicants will be notified by email and invited for an interview and centre visit.

The role is subject to Enhanced Disclosure check.
