North Yorkshire Outdoor Learning Service is currently recruiting for an 0.8 FTE Outdoor Education tutor on a 1 year fixed term contract, based at our East Barnby Centre in the North York Moors.

The post is suitable for individuals who are keen to further their professional development or broadly qualified practioners who would commence employment near the top of the salary range.


The Place

North York Moors is a pretty special place. History and nature have combined to give an amazingly vibrant landscape, rich in heritage and wildlife. An inspiring place to visit, live, work or study. World class surfing, sea kayaking  and mountain biking venues are on the doorstep and easy access to the Pennines, Dales, Northumberland and the Lake District.

East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre, near Whitby is a 112 bed residential centre predominantly involved in running 5 day residential courses for primary and secondary age children from North Yorkshire schools.


The Purpose

The OLS provides inspirational and motivational outdoor learning opportunities for a wide variety of participants at centres and locations throughout the UK.

Our aim is to provide a first class experience, whether it’s a first time outdoor activity experience, field studies residential, expedition training or training and assessment in NGB awards. We provide opportunities that are full of learning, adventure and challenge.

The Person

The successful applicant will join a small team of highly qualified, talented and motivated staff in providing quality outdoor opportunities and developing an established, progressive service for the future of outdoor education in North Yorkshire.

In the role of Outdoor Education tutor you will deliver a diverse range of outdoor activities to a range of participants, engage in continual professional development and progress the centre resource and delivery.

In addition being licensed to drive minibuses you will hold at least 2 of the following qualifications employment.

  • Summer ML or WGL
  • UKCC Level 2 (+relevant endorsements),  BCU Level 2 Inland Kayak/Open Canoe or Sheltered Water Canoe Coach. Open Water experience beneficial
  • Rock Climbing Instructor/Single Pitch Award
  • RYA Dinghy Instructor
  • L2 Mountain Bike Leader


Experience in the following is also beneficial:

  • Sea, Surf and ability to Undertake SLSSGB Surf life guard
  • Bushcraft & Orienteering



The Package

NYOLS is delighted to offer excellent terms of employment. You would be expected to work for 0.8 of 212 days each year including an average of one evening per fortnight. There are generous training opportunities and equipment provision to supplement the Teachers terms and conditions offered in this post.
