High Adventure is one of the premier outdoor education centres in the UK, providing 20 years of exemplary service to both schools, families and the wider public. Located close to Skipton on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales we are in a prime location to deliver exciting outdoor education with a range of on & off-site activities on offer including climbing, cycling, water sports, caving, and high ropes. We work with a large range of clients including Primary schools, Secondary schools and GCSE assessments, family holidays, NCS and youth organisations. Set up and still owned by former teachers we are committed to ensuring the best outdoor experience for our customers and take pride in being a professional, fun, and friendly workplace.


Trainee Instructor position

The position is primarily a training course during which the Trainee Instructor will learn about, and gain valuable experience in, the whole outdoor education industry and a busy residential centre whilst working towards achieving a full range of NGB qualifications. Trainees will begin by shadowing and seconding our fully qualified and experienced staff; as experience and qualifications are gained you will progress to leading and taking responsibility for groups and activities. As part of the role there will be some domestic duties and shifts undertaken each week. The national governing body awards that the 12 month scheme incorporates are below:

Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) Training (Climbing)

Level 1 LCMLA Training & Assessment (Caving)


Personal Performance award (Paddling)

Paddle sport Instructor (Paddling)

Paddle sport Leader Training and Assessment (Paddling)

MIAS Road leader (Cycling)

PCV Medical (Bus), PCV Theory Test (Bus), CPC Mod 2&4 (Bus)

16 hour First Aid Training & Assessment


The package

The trainee instructors’ package is valued at £15,000 per annum. This includes a monthly allowance of £350, all costs and fees relating to training and assessment courses listed above, an end of year bonus of £1,200, full board accomodation in a staff house and utility bills, uniform/clothing. In addition trainees have access to equipment, vehicles, and heavily discounted trade deal accounts with various kit suppliers.

The position is initially for a fixed term starting between Nov/Dec 2021 and finishing end of Dec 2022, for the right person this usually leads to a second year and third year position as a developing instructor where further higher level NGB qualifications are undertaken.


Requirements to apply

We are looking for people who are passionate about being in the outdoors, you do not need a full range of outdoor skills, but some experience will be needed. We are looking for problem solvers who want to work with people; your personality is the most important thing to us. Reliability, commitment to your own and others development, and the enthusiasm to participate fully in both the instructional and more mundane aspects of the centre’s life are vital.


Alongside an amazing personality and the ability to relate to a whole range of people you will require a UK full driving licence and all positions offered are subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
