Outdoor Leader Apprentice at Calvert Trust Exmoor

Calvert Trust Exmoor (CTE) is an activity centre that enables people with disabilities to achieve their potential through the challenge of adventurous activities, to improve the understanding of disability and to encourage the integration of all abilities across society.

Our adventure activities are specifically designed to be accessible for people with physical, sensory, and learning disabilities together with their family, friends and carers.

As a member of the Activities Team, you will assist our Instructor team in a range of activity sessions for people with disabilities. Your role will be actively taking part in sessions, and helping our instructors to give our guests the best experience they can have.

Location:

Calvert Trust Exmoor, Wistlandpound, Kentisbury, Barnstaple. EX31 4SJ

 

Main duties:

Uphold the core values of CTE

Act in accordance with CTE policies and operations

Train up to lead groups in all activities at CTE under the guidance of our Chief Instructors

Be willing to undertake any external activity qualifications and development opportunities provided by CTE

Gain experience working in catering, housekeeping, admin, marketing, fundraising and maintenance teams as part of your role

Be a key team member in ensuring our guests get the best experience possible.

Day to day duties:

Assist in the daily set up, and take down of activity equipment

Assist in communication of information across people and teams

Shadow and assist on all activity sessions

Assist in safety checks, maintenance and general upkeep of the centre activities

To ensure you stay within your training and experience, and be proactive with your own training and development

Actively support fellow colleagues

Support the Chief Instructors with an ad-hoc duties as required

Be willing to lead some activities when trained to do so

Desirable skills and qualifications:

Qualifications in First aid, lifeguarding, rock climbing, canoeing, archery, sailing, biking, bushcraft or horse riding

Skills or Experience in any of the above activities

Degree or equivalent in Outdoor Education, Social work or similar

Experience caring for vunerable people, or people with disabilities

5 GCSE’s (A*-C / 4 – 9)

Degree or similar in related field

Driving license and own transport

Essential skills and qualifications:

Must be able to swim

Relatively active, as the job requires some degree of physical fitness

A Level 1 (GCSE Grade D/3) in Functional Skills Maths and English is essential.

Passionate about the outdoors

Passionate about working with people with disabilities

Future Prospects:

On successful completion of the scheme, candidates will have the opportunity to apply for an outdoor instructor position at Calvert Exmoor. Candidates could move onto work as an Outdoor Instructor, or find a career working with people with disabilities.

Essential Details:

Salary: National Apprenticeship Wage

Working Hours: 35 Hours/ week, 5 days a week

Days of work are normally Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sat & Sun  (this may occassionally vary). When trained up adequately, you may be asked to do some overnights. You are not required to work during the day when working overnight.

When adequately trained, candidates will be asked to work some evenings, to provide evening entertainment for our guests. All applicants must be happy to work evenings because of this.

Open to under 18s? This scheme is for leaners ages 18+ . This is due to appropriate safeguarding measures needed for the diverse needs of our guests and activities.
