Outdoor Instructor (Duke of Edinburgh Award) with Entrust Support Services

LOCATION: Standon Bowers OEC

RATE OF PAY: £18,525 (Real Living Wage) per annum, pro rata


WORKING PATTERN: 37.5 hours on a 5 out of 7-day rota (Usually Thursday to Monday) including some evenings and most weekends.

This is a new and exciting opportunity to work with Entrust to help deliver our growing Duke of Edinburgh Award provision across Staffordshire and the UK!

The Outdoor Instructor for the Duke of Edinburgh Award prepares and delivers a range of training and qualifying courses to both schools and Open Awards.

They support the D of E Co-ordinator with the organisation and preparation of courses and equipment whilst also acting as a Course Director, who is responsible for the organisation of a team of staff to deliver the courses to a high standard.

Entrust Outdoors has a fifty-year pedigree of providing high quality outdoor education for children, young people and adults, with the skills and expertise to deliver a wide range of outcome focused activities through their ‘Explore & Inspire’ ethos.

Entrust Outdoors has a thriving Duke of Edinburgh department, and works alongside our two residential centres in Staffordshire – Standon Bowers and Laches Wood. In addition to this, Entrust Outdoors has well established Youth Programmes, NCS, Educational Visits Advice and First Aid departments. Entrust Outdoors also provides outdoor adventure activities for the British Army as part of their Soldier Development programme.

All our activities are led by highly qualified, passionate, and active outdoor practitioners with great experience and some of this country’s leading professional awards and training.


Key Tasks & Responsibilities

• To be able to effectively plan and deliver high quality outdoor educational sessions as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme with an emphasis on safe practice, meeting the requirements of the Award and a high standard of customer service.

• To deliver a full range of training and qualifying courses for the Duke of Edinburgh Award at all levels.

• Organise, clean, maintain and prepare the necessary equipment such as tents, stoves and supporting paperwork for the Duke of Edinburgh courses.

• Be flexible in their availability to work including most weekends, some evenings and some overnights.

• Work as part of a team to ensure that all the courses and supporting staff comply with all H&S requirements, Award regulations and local working practices including risk assessment and incident reporting.

• To further their experience in their range of outdoor activities both in and out of work time to fulfil NGB award and CPD requirements.

• Be reflective in their practice, looking for continuous development and improvement in both their own and Entrusts delivery of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.



• Experience working with young people in the outdoors.

• Current and passionate in engaging in a range of outdoor activities.

• High personal standards in presentation, communication and delivering customer service.

• Have a walking qualification of at least MLTE Lowland Leader or above whilst also holding or be working towards a range of other NGB awards.

• Relevant experience of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, holding or working towards the Assessor status. The ideal candidate will have completed the Gold Award themselves.

• Hold or be working towards completing the MLTE Expedition Module.

• Hold up to date First Aid and Safeguard Training (or complete upon successful selection)

• Full Driving License (D1+E entitlement advantageous)

• RP/APIOL advantageous

• Open, innovative, collaborative & effective in their working behaviours & underpinning values



• Enhanced DBS and suitable reference are required for this role
