Instructor Development Scheme with the Lagganlia Centre for Outdoor Education
We are seeking four individuals to join our Instructor Development Scheme; placements are normally for a year and begin in August at the start of the academic year. Although, applications and expression of interest are welcome all year round and extensions to the year may be considered.
Lagganlia Outdoor Centre is based in the Cairngorms, Scottish Highlands. Successful candidates will have the enviable opportunity to live and work in a spectacular National Park location. You will be trained by Lagganlia’s established instructional team in one of The City of Edinburgh Council’s highly regarded Outdoor Learning establishments - gaining invaluable industry work experience and varied training and development opportunities including NGB qualifications.
Lagganlia is located in picturesque Glen Feshie Forest, close to the popular resort town of Aviemore. It is the perfect location to experience Badenoch and Strathspey’s lochs, mountains, trails, and river as you learn to be an Outdoor education instructor. Lagganlia’s course program is largely focused on inspiring adventures in wild offsite locations - placements are aimed at those with an active interest and ability in adventurous outdoor activities such as hill walking, climbing, mountain biking, watersports, and snow sports.
Our core purpose is to deliver outstanding residential courses tailored to national outcomes and individual needs. It is vital applicants enjoy working with teachers and children, particularly P7 pupils.
This is an unpaid placement - in addition to the training and qualifications offered during your placement year, you will benefit from onsite accommodation in our dedicated trainee’s lodge, Carnethy. Board includes utilities and a weekly expense allowance of £40. Dinner is provided whilst on duty.
You will have access to advice and support to go adventuring in your own time to consolidate your personal skills and assist with the achievement of your NGB’s. Once qualifications are obtained there may be an opportunity to undertake paid work as a trainee instructor to complement your placement.
During curricular operational hours (0845-1700 term time) - you will either be shadowing and assisting instructors in the delivery of high-quality outdoor learning courses, participating in personal development as recommended by mentors (working towards relevant NGB qualifications), engaging in facilities work (general grounds, housekeeping, equipment and facility maintenance) or being trained by instructors/lead instructors. In addition to the core activities, you will undertake training and gain hands on understanding of the day-to-day operation of a Centre, successful candidates will be required to support the delivery of 2 residential evenings per week (1700-2100 term time) and contribute to weekend and holiday operations, 1 weekend in every 4 plus a share of holiday periods.
The development scheme requires a high level of commitment from you for 12 months, in return you will develop first hand group coaching and instructional skills, national qualifications and a realistic insight into the life and work of an outdoor instructor. This will be a challenging yet rewarding experience which will prepare you for an exciting career in this sought-after industry.
