Apprentice Outdoor Activity Instructor at Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust

Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust is looking to recruit Apprentice Activity Instructors to join our dynamic team of professional staff. 

The Trust’s 70-bed residential centre is situated in the beautiful Herefordshire village of Longtown on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It has excellent facilities set in 16 acres of private grounds and is located between the eastern edge of the Black Mountains and the River Monnow. 

This is a full-time post with in-built training and professional development opportunities. You will receive four formal qualifications offered by Channel Training during the completion of the apprentice programme which could include: Level 3 Outdoor First Aid, Archery GB, PSRC and PSI. Additional coaching and training will be offered by our experienced staff team across a breadth of relevant skills at challenging locations in our local area.

We are looking for committed and enthusiastic apprentices to assist with the delivery of high quality social and personal development through programmes of residential and non-residential outdoor learning. Applicants must have some personal experience of outdoor and adventurous activities and be keen to develop leadership skills in a range of disciplines. 

Good organisation, communication and ICT skills are expected and the successful candidate will need to demonstrate their initiative and resourcefulness. Apprentices will work towards a Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor apprenticeship and a range of relevant outdoor skills and leadership awards.

Day to Day Duties:

Term 1
Observing and assisting experienced Outdoor Learning Tutors delivering sessions including caving, climbing, canoeing, hill walking, stand-up paddleboarding, gorge walking and a range of on-site activities.

Term 2

Begin taking the lead on on-site activities, conduct supervised parts of off-site activities.

Term 3

Independently deliver the full range of on-site activities, deliver some off-site activities under supervision/mentorship.

Throughout
Seek out additional learning opportunities to diversify their experience, Complete portfolio tasks to a high standard, Attend staff planning meetings, Assist with the daily cleaning, tidying and catering tasks, understand of centre policies and their importance in professional practice, Maintain a high standard of health and safety for themselves and visitors, Demonstrate role model behaviour in accordance with our Code of Conduct.

 

Skills and qualifications:

GCSE Grade C / 4 in Maths and English – Essential

Experience in a range of outdoor activities beyond that of a first go – Essential

A positive drive to develop your personal skills in adventurous activities – Essential

A desire to develop leadership in these activities – Essential

Knowledge and experience of working with children and young people – Desirable

Completion of training courses in paddlesports, climbing, hillwalking or other disciplines – Desirable

Previous training in the values and purposes of Outdoor Learning– Desirable

Personal skills awards in Outdoor Activities e.g. BC personal performance awards, NICAS, D of E, Scouts etc. – Desirable

Logged experience of personal participation in outdoor activities– Desirable

Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre, The Court House, Longtown, Hereford, HR2 0LD

Please note: En-suite accommodation with access to a shared kitchen is available at a subsidised rate and centre meals are available to all staff on their working days.

Our ideal candidate is one who is actively working towards outdoor leadership qualifications and is committed to commencing a career in the outdoor sector.

Essential Details:

Salary: £10,296 per year

Working Hours:  Full time – 8.30 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday with regular evening and some weekend working required yet additional flexibility outside of term time.

Minimum age: 18+

 

Closing Date: 29th September 2023

Interview Date: 2nd October 2023

Potential Start Date: 30th October 2023
