Apprentice Outdoor Activity Instructor at Thriftwood Scout Campsite & Activity Centre

 

Thriftwood International Scout Campsite is one of the UK’s premier Campsites and Activity Centres. Open for Scouting, Guiding & other Organised Youth Groups. Camping, Residentials and Activity Days.

The Scout campsite and activity centre is based in 96 acres of private woodland which is a 10 min walk to Brentwood town and train station and a 20 minute train journey to central London.

The apprenticeship will involve delivering land and water activities to a wide range of customers from aged 6 upwards. Instructors deliver taster sessions through to progression courses.

Apprentices will live on-site as part of a team of apprentices and volunteers.

Description:

The day to day duties will include:

Preparing activity sessions.

Delivering activity sessions.

Assisting in the running of the centre, facilitating the customer’s needs.

Checking and maintaining equipment.

Cleaning and preparing residential facilities.

Site maintenance

 

Hourly rate: National Apprenticeship wage

 

Working Week:

Minimum of 36 hours per week, over 6 days.

Training to be provided

2 Day ITC Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid

Safeguarding training and certificate

Manual Handling (ITC Level 2 Award in safe moving and handling)

ITC Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the workplace

COSHH Training

Customer Care Training

Prevent Training

Extremism & Radicalisation Awareness

Fire Safety Awareness

Food Safety L2

Manual Handling Awareness

Ladder Safety

Water:

British Canoeing 2* / Discover / Explore

British Canoeing Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT)

British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor Course

Land:

Climbing Wall Instructor Award Training

Mountain Training Hills Skills Training

ERCA Low Ropes Instructor

Scout Climbing Instructor

Archery GB Instructor

Scout Tomahawk Instructor

 

Qualifications

Desirable – 5 GCSEs A*-C.

Essential – English and Maths GCSEs Grade 3 or D.

Personal Qualities

Outgoing, approachable, well presented, friendly, committed, enthusiastic, independent, fit and keen to learn.  A positive drive to develop your personal skills in adventurous activities is essential.

Accommodation is available.

 

Future prospects

Using the experience gained on the apprenticeship to gain a summer instructor position at Thriftwood or moving on to a new centre either within Scouting or the wider sector.
