Changes in IOL Trustee Board

The Trustee Board of IOL plays a vital role in governance and strategy steering and holding accountable the Institute’s executive.  As with all well managed boards there is a healthy turnover of trustees and offices within it.

Retirement of Chair

At the recent board meeting a vote of thanks was made to John Crosbie for his service as Chair for the past 7 years.  John has brought valuable stability and leadership to the Board over that period, overseeing the establishment of the Institute as a charitable company limited by guarantee and developing of a strong succession plan for the Board’s future.

New Chair

Mike King has been elected as the new Chair of Trustees.  He joined the Board in 2010 and will serve his final term as Chair.  Mike has a wealth of experience in the sector and those just starting out as apprentices should note that Mike’s career in outdoor learning started with an apprenticeship at the age of 16.  He now leads the education charity Releasing Potential.

Changes to Trustee Board membership

In addition to a change in Chair, 2019 has seen the retirement of Elspeth Mason and Max Norris, thanks go to them both.  In addition to her role on the Board Elspeth made a significant contribution to the development of IOL through her editorship of Horizons.

New Trustees elected at the recent AGM are Claire Fowler and Asa Gurden.  Both are experienced and influential individuals in the sector.  Claire has been involved heavily involved in field studies for many years and until recently was the Chair of the Natural Environment Sector working group.  Asa currently plays a key management role for The Scouts and is the Chair of the Learning Away steering group.
