Covid-19 Lobbying

Lobbying

Residential Outdoor Education has been devastated by the effects of COVID-19 and needs more government support to survive. All IOL members and supporters of outdoor learning can help us make the case - write to your local MP and sign the #saveoutdoored and #SaveYourOutdoorCentres petitions.

UK Outdoors is the sector voice for the Outdoor Learning and the Adventure World. UK Outdoors is lobbying to change the governments Covid 19 guidance which is preventing overnight stays in Outdoor Education Residential Centres. This guidance is preventing formative educational experiences to at least 5 million students across the UK. The sector provides over 15,000 jobs and £700m to the UK economy.

Objective: The Government have committed to review the guidance advising against residential outdoor education in November. Whilst we participate in the Review, we are aiming to build political support to ensure that guidance and our sector is reopened in time for the 2021 season.

Covid-19: The huge impact on residential outdoor centres

There are some sobering stats on how this has affected the economics of our industry.
- 2/3 of the sector expect to lose at least 80% of their income this year.
- 1/3 of centres have disposed of assests
- 2/3 of centres have mothballed facilities
- 81% have furloughed workers
- 50% have cut staff wages
- 70% have made up to 20% of their workforce redundant

Tim Farron, MP says, "Our outdoor education centres are needed now more than ever. They can play a big role in restoring children's love of learning and be really beneficial for both their physical and mental health. It's surely a no brainer for the Government to #SaveOutdoorEd".

BBC North West news featured an item about the plight of a Cumbrian centre. See the feature here.
