Chief Executive Officer
I am an experienced learning and development professional. My background is in outdoor development training, professional service firm management, executive coaching and accountancy. This combination of experience fits well with the diverse requirements of the Institute’s Chief Executive role. I have a passion for helping individuals understand their relationship with the organisations they are a part of as well as developing their personal and professional abilities.
I am also the part-time Chief Executive of Lindley Educational Trust, a charity focused on the personal development of children and young people. The Trust has a particular interest in vulnerable young people and operates residential outdoor centres and urban youth groups.
Professional Standards Manager
I believe the outdoors provides a space where human potential can flourish and as the IOL Professional Standards Manager I want to help shape a profession where everyone can be valued for their strengths and have the support, guidance and opportunity to excel. My career began in aerospace design, but a passion for learning and development led to a Masters in Recreation Management, instructing, teaching and leading outdoor centres.
I am known for my training, facilitation, functional and strategic leadership skills and also work as a consultant within the private and public sector and with elite competitors. I am a Qualified Teacher, UKCP Registered Psychotherapist & Supervisor and the elected chair of the IOL North West Region.
I joined IOL in 2007, prior to this I worked for Adventure Education Training running the administration and finance for their Learning and Skills Council Apprenticeship contract. I started my career in the pathology department of my local hospital sorting specimens, I then moved to administration in a community health centre and the outpatients department of a local hospital. A house move and a career change followed, underwriting mortgages for a building society. During this time I studied with the Open University and I have a BSc(Open), I covered various topics but included Environment, Health & Disease and Oceanography. I have developed various strengths and skills and along with a ‘can do’ attitude which embraces change, the outdoor sector is ideal for me.
