Professional Development

The Institute for Outdoor Learning is committed to supporting Professional Development in the Outdoor Learning Field. This is achieved through:

SUPPORT

  • One of the Institute's main aims is to promote the provision of quality developmental outdoor experiences for all. This includes supporting members and providing guidance to other practitioners whose involvement in outdoor learning may not be central to their work. One of the Institute's roles is to provide easy access to shared good practice from the field.

FREE RESOURCES

  • IOL is currently developing a selection of free web-based resources for anyone interested in Outdoor Learning provision.

OTHER IOL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

  • Following the success of APIOL, we're developing other projects to complete our suite of qualifications at all levels of the Career Development Framework. Also see IOL and professional development.
  • For newcomers to the field (seasonal instructors and others)
SkillsActive, the British Activity Holidays Association, the National Open College Network and IOL have worked together to develop an Outdoor Introductory Award, whose standards are now on the Qualifications and Curriculum Framework.  Employers and practitioners can start using these right now, to benchmark skills at this level, and we hope a qualification will be available from the Autumn of 2010.  Click here to view the standards.
  • For session leaders (people beginning a full time career)
We have developed a workshop in Facilitation Skills; contact the IOL office for details of  when and where it is being held in 2010.
We have also developed Registered Practitioner of IOL, an accreditation for practitioners with some experience of delivering sessions, but who are not yet ready for APIOL.  Click here for details of RPIOL
  • For practitioners who already have APIOL
Leading Practitioner of IOL is now available.  Click here for details.
