How do I become an APIOL?

Then …

Complete the APIOL Self assessment to help you decide whether APIOL is the right thing for you to embark on, at this moment in time

Then …

email the IOL office at institute@outdoor-learning.org to get your APIOL information pack and Part 1 registration of interest.

Then ….

Fill in your Part 1 Registration of interest and register for APIOL. 
The APIOL accreditation process costs £400 - an initial fee of £50 is due when applying, returning your Part 1 form, and the balance of £350 is due before you attend the Induction meeting.

Your Regional Co-ordinator will phone you to discuss whether you have enough experience and understanding to become an APIOL in 6 months.  (If not, they will put you in touch with your regional professional development support person).

What are the benefits of registering for APIOL?

Then ….

Pay the remainder of the APIOL fee (The APIOL accreditation process costs £400 - an initial fee of £50 is due when applying, returning your Part 1 form, and the balance of £350 is due before you attend the Induction meeting), attend an induction meeting, and make contact with your mentor.

With your mentor, complete Part 2 (Career Development Review) and start collecting evidence for Part 3 of your application (Demonstrating the APIOL criteria).

Identify any areas where you need to gain further experience, and start carrying out development activities.

Then …

Complete any development activities, and complete Part 3 of your application, including statements from witnesses and referee details.

Agree with your mentor what they will write about you in their statement.  Agree with your mentor that you are ready for interview.

Then ….

Contact your Regional Co-ordinator to book an interview date, and send them your completed application (CV, Career Development Review, Evidence against the Criteria, witness and mentor statements).

Then …

Attend your interview, which will last one hour.  You will be interviewed by a panel of 2 trained APIOL assessors, who are experienced practitioners.  The aim of the interview is to:

Check your documented experience

Celebrate your achievements

Reflect on your career to date and where you want to go next.

Then …

The assessors will tell you their recommendation to the IOL Board.  (Most people are successful because of the careful preparation you have put in).

If you are deferred, you will be supported to carry out the development work you need to undertake, and a reassessment format will be agreed.
