Horizons Magazine : How to Contribute

Anyone can do it!

Horizons contact : Submission Guidance : Get Started

Thanks again to everyone who has been sending in their articles but as ever we all get busy and distracted (something about actually playing out rather than writing about it!) to get anything down on paper.

The very best people to write articles for Outdoor Professionals are outdoor professionals themselves. You don't need to be a literary or journalistic genius - we all have something valuable to contribute.
So let's have your epic tales (and the lessons you’ve learnt from them), your hints and tips, your thoughts on all things professional, your favourite tools of the trade (whether they be theory models, special venues or practical equipment) and anything else you can share that others might find useful.
Brief guidance on what we need for your article

Brief guidance on what we need for your article

  • Articles are 2 - 4 pages at 400 words per page
  • Photos / illustration must be at high resolution and sent sepearetly via email or disk
  • Author biography - up to 50 words about yourself
  • References / notes - these are useful to readers
  • Send by email with 'Horizons Article Submission' in the subject heading to: horizons@outdoor-learning.org

How to get started

  • What makes articles feel good to read is a progression beyond a report of the facts into the underlying learning or understanding. That old reviewing rule of thumb: 'What, So What? Now What?' Keep the description of the model / experience / report / idea / activity brief, relevant to the readers and fairly jargon free, give some explanations and maybe examples. The really interesting bits tend to be: 'How it is /was done; Why is / was it used; How and why it can be used elsewhere.' Also include any analysis, conclusions, reflections and lessons learnt.
  • The best articles appeal to a wide range of practitioners and it's great if people can make use of the article to improve their professional practice, broaden their horizons or deepen their understanding. What might be 'just something you do' might be really interesting to someone who has never come across it before or who is using it completely differently. In general it's a good idea to aim it at a level that will be interesting to professional practitioners, college lectures or teachers with a few years experience, Simple stuff can be very useful as something to incorporate into our own practice or add to our courses or staff training.
  • The aim is to make Horizons interesting and appealing right across the field – we can only do this if we have articles sent in that have that appeal! So be brave – give it a go, if you are unsure about what will work (we want to ensure that what we publish is interesting and relevant) send it in rough and we'll chat it over. Articles with an academic focus are also welcome although they may need to have a 'jargon buster' and be précised so people can get a feel for it in their coffee break – longer articles can always have the full version available on the web for those that have had their appetites wetted!
  • Keep giving us the feedback – it has been appreciated. If you think we should be covering other topics – tell us...or better still get someone to write something, or write it yourself.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Most of us have an article we have been meaning to write for ages – well now is the time!
