Summer Camps Forum

The Institute for Outdoor Learning was represented at a meeting in December held at the British Council. The meeting was called by Chris Green of Activate Training and Education to discuss the possibility of developing a body to be known as the National Association (or Federation) of Summer Camp Organisers in Great Britain.
Sir David Green (Director General of the British Council) welcomed the delegates who represented a large range of UK organisations interested in Summer Camps (including Brathay Trust, Forest Schools Camps, Kids Clubs, PGL).

Chris Green outlined the objective of combining efforts to increase the very small proportion of British young people who attend any kind of summer camp (i.e. a ‘residential holiday’ where individual children and young people from different schools, backgrounds and parts of Britain could meet, live together and get to know each other during a positive programme of holiday activities).

It was felt that instead of a formal body, a Summer Camp Forum be formed. A working party with representatives from IOL, BAHA, CCI, YMCA, EAC and YHA has been formed to look at the logistics of such a forum and plan to report back to the larger group in 2007.
