'GIVE US A BREAK' – OPPORTUNITIES AND FUNDING ASSISTANCE FOR CHILDREN AFFECTED BY SOCIAL EXCLUSION
CAN YOU EXPERIENCE CO LTD, LOCH LOMOND have teamed up with the SCOTTISH YOUTH HOSTELS ASSOCIATION’s Social Inclusion Project - ‘Give Us A Break’, sponsored by Provident Financial.
The aim of this project is to provide opportunities and funding assistance to young people affected by social exclusion.
Carrongrange School in Falkirk benefited from the scheme and enjoyed a residential break at Rowardennan Youth Hostel, Loch Lomond. They had a number of outdoor activities to choose from during their two day break, i.e. canoeing, mountain biking, raft building, power kiting, orienteering, team building, treasure hunts, survival skills, hiking, mini highland games and art in the environment! The school chose to participate in canoeing, team building and hiking, all of which they loved – it allowed them to experience new environments, exciting challenges and as a result increased their self-confidence. Frances Macguire from Carrongrange School said, ‘our group of pupils, all with special needs, had a wonderful experience. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and achieved things which they would never have believed possible through the encouragement and expertise of the staff. There was a great emphasis on teamwork and challenges were always provided within the parameters of safety considerations and we all had great fun. Perhaps it is best summed up in a quote from one of the pupils, ’this is like a dream, I’ve never been to anywhere like this before’.
