National Occupational Standards

Work has begun on a new project to develop National Occupational Standards (NOS) for ‘higher’ level outdoors sector occupations, for example:
• Facilitator/Practitioner • Chief/Senior Instructor;
• Programme Manager/Director • Centre Manager.

A core part of the development process is the formation and use of a Technical Expert Group (TEG) which, guided and supported by SkillsActive and an experienced consultant, will have the opportunity to develop the NOS. By drawing upon specialist knowledge from all areas of the sector we can ensure that the project outcomes match industry needs, and that the new outdoors NOS extending to higher levels are fit for purpose. The first meeting was on 4th of November at SkillsActive’s offices in London, and it is anticipated that 3 or 4 meetings will be required before the end of the project in September 2009. If people cannot make this first meeting, it will be possible to join and have input to subsequent meetings. For those who are interested, but are unable to make meetings, I will be maintaining a wider ‘virtual’ group to allow progress to be reviewed and inputs made.
