IOL Annual Conference and AGM

24th March 2007

at East Barnby Centre, N. Yorkshire

A YOUTH WORK APPROACH TO OUTDOOR LEARNING

Louise Edwards Head of Outdoor Learning & Development, Surrey Youth Service.

My conference encouraged participants to explore quality outdoor learning and best practice in 3 main settings:

  1. Based in a residential outdoor education centre in a national park 3 hours drive from base.
  2. Based on a non- residential centre situated within the funding local authority.
  3. Based on a mobile team of outdoor education workers who go to the client.

Each group presented a 3 minute sales pitch promoting their particular type of provision to the ‘Children’s services committee’for the newly formed ‘Borough of Toytown’.  There was a chance to discuss the pros and cons of each provision against key criteria of Every Child Matters, value for money, inclusiveness e.t.c..  Out of this discussion came some ‘out of the box’ thinking about how each type of provision can make the highest impact to young people.

The purpose of this workshop was for everyone to be inspired by new ideas and have a fresh look at their own work. Everyone had to come up with at least one new idea they could take back to work and implement to broaden the scope of outdoor learning within their particular setting.

Everyone who participated really gave it a great deal of energy and enthusiasm which resulted in a constructive and positive workshop.
