IOL Annual Conference and AGM

24th March 2007

at East Barnby Centre, N. Yorkshire

John Crosbie APIOL, Director of Calvert Trust Keswick. “Adventure for All – How can we better enable participation by people with Disabilities”.

A brief questionnaire identified how little delegates were aware of the current legislation relating to disability in our environment -although it has been about for 12 years. A choice of topics which could be covered in the workshop led to the following being the most popular:
Philosophy for including people with disabilities caused some debate and soul searching. It identified that a range of options were available from which providers could decide their stance and justify their position.
Adapting equipment saw how, with little or no cost, equipment could be adapted to cater for a range of people with disabilities. The options of selecting equipment which was more inclusive in design when replacements were needed could make the greatest  difference with the least impact on the provider‚s delivery.
Risk management and liability issues for adaptations were considered. Strategies were identified which were supported by the Activities Industry Mutual Insurance representatives.
Moving and Handling people is a contentious area in the outdoors. The legalities were explained along with ways of minimising the risks to comply within the law.
