Summary of IOL Bushcraft and Survival Skills SIG Executive meeting – Windlehill Farm - 10th December 2007-12-10
Present: Dave Watson, Jason Ingamells, John Rhyder, Neil Feist, Anne Humberstone
Apologies: Mike Rushton
Appointments
Voting took place for the posts of Chair, Secretary and Membership Officer. The following postholders were appointed:
- Chair : Dave Watson
- Secretary : Anne Humberstone
- Membership Officer : Neil Feist
Pending approval from IOL it was proposed that the tenure of Chair be two years and other posts one year.
It was deemed that there was currently no requirement for a Treasurer’s post but that the situation would be reviewed should the need arise in the future.
Practitioner Training Framework
The draft training framework drawn up by the SIG was considered with a view to how to take it forward.
It was suggested that the competency framework be approved internally by the IOL, rather than by an awarding body, and that the IOL publish a list of approved providers who deliver programmes at differing levels with the minimum being the agreed framework
The group then drew up a draft assessment process including an exemption process for those with evidence of accredited courses as well as those who can demonstrate competence through experience.
It was proposed that there be two levels of ‘buy-in’ with the first being a ‘code of conduct’ similar to existing IOL codes of conduct e.g. ‘sustainability’ whereby practitioners agree to working within the code which would be based around the competency framework. The IOL could then publicise a list of these practitioners on the website.
The second level would be those practitioners who agreed to being assessed by a panel, by a similar process to the APIOL and those reaching the required standard are then listed as approved bushcraft providers on the IOL website.
It was agreed that there be two levels to the assessment process – one for individuals and one for assessors.
The above proposals will be discussed with Kaz Brush for advice and approval
Future Meetings
The next Exec meeting will be held on either 11th, 13th and 14th Feb 2008. To be agreed.
