Wigan Council Lakeland Outdoor Education Centres
Assistant Headteacher (L1- L5) Based mainly at Hinning House OEC
Low Bank Ground OEC, Coniston and Hinning House OEC in the Duddon Valley are owned by Wigan Council and are part of the Children and Young People's Services. They are both well-established residential outdoor education centres running courses for schools, colleges, youth groups, adults and families. The Centres require an Assistant Headteacher from 1st September 2008 to join an enthusiastic team of teachers who work at both Centres. The Assistant Headteacher will be responsible for the day to day management of Hinning House and they will based here for most weeks of the year. They will teach mainly on primary school courses but there will be opportunities to develop courses linked to the new 14-19 diplomas. The successful applicant will require experience and qualifications in a wide range of outdoor and environmental activities.
The Centres use residential and outdoor education to support the "Every Child Matters" agenda and their work relates closely to Wigan Council's "Children and Young People's Plan". Although most of the work is based on using adventurous activities as a means of developing personal, social and environmental awareness, the Centres offer a broad curriculum in collaboration with visiting schools. Each Centre has computers, interactive whiteboards, internet access and video conferencing facilities. Over many years they have established an excellent reputation for their work in environmental education, practical conservation and sustainable practice.
Applicants must have Qualified Teacher Status, experience of teaching outdoor education in a residential centre, a valid driving licence and ability to drive a minibus and a current first aid qualification. They will be required to complete an enhanced CRB disclosure. Leadership scale (L1- L5: currently £34,938- £38,559) pay and conditions apply.
