Introductory Bushcraft Course

at Abriachan Wood Inverness on 31st May – 1st June

Saturday 9.00a.m – 6.00p.m & Sunday 9.00a.m – 4.00p.m.

 

It will cost £100 per person. Hot drinks provided, but please bring a packed lunch for both days.

Qualified Bushcraft Instructor George Yeomans has been running continuing professional development and taster courses in the subject of Bushcraft for individuals and such groups as the Association of International Mountain Leaders, D of E providers, Forest School practitioners and outdoor activity instructors. Through a series of practical activities supported with an information pack to take away at the end of the course, you will gain a new insight into our natural world and the need for conservation of its limited resources, plus will have been introduced to some useful Bushcraft skills. A course completion certificate is issued to each participant, which can be used as proof of continuing professional development for all those involved in teaching and outdoor related activities.


The next two day introductory course at Abriachan will cover the following:

- Philosophy of Bushcraft and how that relates to the outdoor person.
- Plant and tree identification plus information on useful books to aid identification and give background knowledge.
-  Use of local plants and trees for food, water, medicine, cordage, fire lighting, containers and shelter.
- Introduction to basic tracking and wildlife observation.
- Introduction into natural navigation or finding your way without the use of a map, compass or GPS.
- The important Bushcraft skill of fire making and how it was produced throughout history.
-  Fire lighting using natural materials and by the fire by friction technique.
- Fire construction and maintenance.
- Bushcraft tools: design, selection, safe use and maintenance.
-  Legislation and the law in relation to Bushcraft activities.
-  Examples of improvised natural shelters.
- Conservation of resources and “Leave no Trace”


George also holds qualifications as a Teacher in Outdoor Education, a Summer, Winter and International Mountain Leader and as a Mountain Rescue and Advanced Explorer First Aider.


He is a member of the Institute of Outdoor Learning and holds an enhanced CRB certificate. He has taught full and part-time in schools for over twenty years and has run his own outdoor business since 1995.
